Oxford Street is known worldwide for its iconic Christmas lights. However, similar to other minority communities striving for cultural representation, there was a noticeable lack of celebration and recognition of Ramadan in London's public spaces for all the diverse communities of London to enjoy.
Idea & Execution
We worked together with the founders of the Ramadan Lights project to design and install 30,000 sustainable lights on Coventry Street, between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square and the following year on Oxford Street, which featured glittering moons and stars to symbolise the phases of the moon during Ramadan.
To compliment the lights,we created an animation film showcasingthe magic of Ramadan spreading over the city of London before finally culminating in the formation of the lights. This film was aired on TV and digital channels.
Result
The Ramadan Lights were officially turned on by the Mayor of London and was well-received by the community, with more than 1 million people visiting the installation over a month, drawing significant public attention and media coverage across the world.
